Combining mountains and the sea, sublime landscapes, diverse nature, cultural heritage and famous throughout the world, Alpes-Maritimes sits in the south-eastern corner of Provence and is bordered by the départements of Var in the south-west, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the north-west and Italy to the north and east.

Surrounding the Principality of Monaco and its famous rock, and bathed in sunshine, it boasts some of the most exclusive coastline on the Mediterranean. Long regarded as the playground of the rich and famous, Nice with its “Promenade des Anglais”, and Cannes and its “Croisette”, are just two of the élite resort towns on this, the famous Côte-d'Azur or French Riviera.

The Côte-d'Azur

With 25km (15mi) of fine sand and shingle beaches, Antibes attracts crowds of holidaymakers every year. With its Fort Carré, and the Cap d’Antibes, a rocky spur on which are nestled sublime villas and sumptuous hotels featuring white Art Deco facades, it is valued for its large marina and the old town which is imbued with a particular charm typical of Provence.

Menton, is the last French town before Italy. The high cliffs allow it to benefit from a mild climate and sunshine, ideal for growing the famous Menton lemons that are renowned throughout the country. In March, these fruits are celebrated during the Lemon Festival. With an air of carnival, unusual floats made with different varieties of citrus fruits parade through the streets. Elephants, castles, dragons and lions, no sculpture seems impossible, and young and old alike can only marvel at the magnificent spectacle.

Grasse - The World Capital of Perfume

Lying inland, in the hills north of Cannes, sits the medieval town of Grasse - the birthplace and cradle of the world’s perfume industry. In the warm temperate air, small colourful cafés, brasseries and shops blend with russet-hued villas that are embellished with every colour of the Provençal palette. Among the town’s steep, winding, cobblestone streets, gift shops sell pastel French soaps, fragranced candles, cosmetics and of course - perfume. For over 500 years Grasse has been the centre of the world’s perfume industry and is today internationally recognised as the world capital of perfume (La Capitale Mondiale des Parfums).

Mercantour National Park

Further north, in the foothills of the alps, the Parc national du Mercantour (Mercantour National Park), covers an area of 685sq km (264sq mi) and features seven valleys including the Val d'Allos and the Vallee des Merveilles, which are overlooked by the Cime du Gelas, the third tallest summit in the Alpes-Maritimes département, reaching a peak of 3,143m (10,311ft). Home to several thousand goat-antelopes known as a chamois, wildlife abounds with ibex, red deer, roe deer, rabbits, marmots, wild boars, wolves, buzzards, and the famous golden eagles. Being a protected area, and with over 2,000 species of flowering plants, the park is a haven for wild-life and nature.
