Sodium Bicarbonate is a versatile eco-friendly cleaning agent that doesn't contain any preservatives and is an essential ingredient in your DIY laundry or home cleaning routine. It can be used to effectively remove stains from fabrics, neutralise unpleasant odours and so much more. In addition, it also has many other household uses so it’s a true multi-purpose cleaning product and ingredient.

Sodium Bicarbonate can be used as an all-purpose cleaner, a limescale remover, as a fabric softener, as a deodoriser and a stain remover, for making Sodium Citrate (a laundry sequestrant) which improves the performance of your wash (especially in hard water areas). Sequestrants like sodium citrate improve the performance of detergents and act as cleaning aid and water softener which allows the soap to work more effectively. It also makes a great fabric softener! (see directions for use).

LAUNDRY:

Use for heavily soiled or badly stained laundry - except for delicates including wool and silk (see directions for use).

HOUSEHOLD:

Sodium bicarbonate is a multi-purpose product and is an affordable way to clean your home toxin-free, and can be used to clean surfaces in your kitchen and bathroom without scratching them.  It has an effective but gentle abrasive action and is really handy for scrubbing difficult spots and cutting through grease.  As a base, it absorbs and neutralises odours, so it can also be used as a multi-purpose odour remover.

Also, recent studies have shown that surface pesticide residues present on fruit and vegetables were most effectively removed by sodium bicarbonate solution when compared to either tap-water or bleach. It will remove up to 96% of pesticides from fruit and vegetables when mixed with water and gently rubbed on the surfaces of fruit.  The solution eliminates nearly all the resides left by most commonly applied pesticides within 15 minutes.

    To Make Sodium Citrate liquid:

    INGREDIENTS:

    180g Citric Acid

    250g Sodium Bicarbonate

    750ml Water

    PRECAUTIONS:

Introducing bicarbonate of soda during the mixing process will cause a reaction and the solution will begin to fizz. In fact, every time you add sodium bicarbonate an intensive reaction will start - this is nothing to worry about, but part of a natural process. For this reason however, it is best to use a suitable large container or pan placed in the sink.

    METHOD:

Pour the water into your container or pan, then add the citric acid powder and stir until dissolved.

Next, gradually add the sodium bicarbonate a little at a time.  Each time, wait for the fizzing to subside before adding more.  Continue adding the sodium bicarbonate until the reaction stops.  The process is not complicated, but it can take a little time, because adding large portions of sodium can make the reaction too intense and produce lots of foam, so be patient!

The solution is ready when the fizzing stops. It is better if you leave it to sit overnight before storing in a bottle.

The pH of the solution should be 7 if all the citric acid has been neutralized. If you wish, you can check it using pH strips

  • Recommended:

Use as part of your eco-friendly DIY washday routine:

Do not clean aluminium with bicarbonate of soda (but it is suitable for all other metal surfaces and alloys).

Do not use for silk, wool or delicate fabrics.
